Toilet and Drain Clogs
You may not need a plumber for small toilet or drain clogs. Try to resolve the problem yourself before making a maintenance request.
If your toilet clogs, be careful not to flush it multiple times; this could cause the basin to overflow and flood your bathroom.
Instead, use a plunger to attempt to push the blockage through your pipe.
If you have a drain clog, you'll often become aware of the problem before it escalates. If water is draining slowly, there is likely something blocking the line.
Fortunately, a plunger is also useful in this situation. Prevention is also important; consider installing drain traps to keep debris from entering the pipes.
Please only turn to drain cleaners like Draino as a last resort.
If you lose electrical power in your rental property, call your utility company to learn if there is a systemwide outage. Loss of power sometimes occurs in bad weather or when lines fall, for example.
If you're the only home impacted, you should also make sure a breaker problem isn't in play. If you overload your electrical circuit, your breaker will flip to protect the system.
Locate yours and make certain the lever is in the ON position (flip it back if necessary).
No Hot Water?
If you don't have hot water access, you need to verify the settings on your hot water heater. Check the tank for any obvious issues and try to cycle it if necessary.
If you do need to make any changes to the settings, wait 15 to 20 minutes before checking to make sure the water is heating properly.
If your air conditioning or furnace isn't working properly, you may be able to resolve the issue by changing the settings on your thermostat. Make certain the system isn't in vacation mode or off completely.
You can also call your electrical company to make sure there are no problems with your utility accounts.
